A Support Program for Parents in the Ethiopian Community

For children to succeed, they need the support and understanding of their parents. Due to cultural and linguistic differences, however, many parents from the Ethiopian community feel powerless and fail to be active partners in their children's developmental processes. The program is designed to give these parents the tools to help them better understand their children and enable the healthy parental involvement that is essential for their children's success. Existing programs work with only the younger generation; by working with the parents and allowing them an opportunity for growth, this program aims to fill that gap.

Details

  • At the group level – there will be 3 group meetings for parents. Meetings will be an empowering experience, allowing parents to share their experiences and hear from others that face similar challenges. In these meetings, we want to address topics relevant to all teenagers, including parenting, puberty, and healthy sexuality. In addition, we will hold one meeting that includes both parents and children which will include an activity designed to foster communication and closeness.
  • On the individual level– 3 individual sessions with the parents, guided by a trained staff member. The sessions will focus on the specific child. Content will include: getting to know the child’s strengths and weaknesses; a discussion about their emotional world; dealing with disciplinary, social, and academic difficulties; and tools for having discussions on these topics.
